  • Will I ever be pain free?
The first step in becoming pain free is holding the belief that you can be and will be. The chances are that pain is heavily tied into your perceptions of everyday life, you identify with pain and you subconsciously or conscious place it in your future with you. A great example would be "I know if I train regularly my body will eventually break down and my knee will be dreadful" It may seem almost impossible right now to imagine a future without pain, but it is possible and Brett can guide you there.
  • Why is this happening to me?
Not until you observe your past, and your perception of the future and look for patterns with how these memories, emotions and thoughts are linked to flare ups and painful episodes will it start to become apparent why this is happening to you. Brett is an expert in guiding you to these realisations in a way that leaves you feeling hopeful not hopeless.
  • People judge me on physical appearance and believe I am fine, but inside I am struggling everyday. What can I do?
Finding yourself in a place where you feel no one relates to what you are experiencing can leave you feeling incredibly lonely. The first step to feeling relatable is allowing yourself to be relatable to others - I know that can often be a pill to swallow and perhaps you're not ready to hear that. Very often people who feel like this tend to want to do everything on their own for the sake of not bothering others, or feeling like a failure or a burden if they ask for help. Brett has personal experience of this, and will guide you to understand how your personality, beliefs and perceptions help create this experience of loneliness and unrelatability and how you can move forward.
  • Why can no one tell me exactly where my problem is? It doesn't even show up on scans!
This is a complex question and hard to keep brief, but here goes: You will notice the more you talk to people with physical pain that there is not always a clear physical explanation. No breaks, no tears and it is so confusing. You see doctor after doctor, you travel worldwide for the top consultants and still no physical answer, so now you feel lost, broken and proceed to look for ways to protect your body rather than ways to enhance your capability. This is because many physical problems lasting more than 3 months (termed chronic) are actually mind-body problems. This is very often where we meet our clients. Keep in mind that where attention goes, energy flows. It is very common for someone who experiences daily back pain to hold a belief that their back will be painful if they do 'x' The more they do 'x' and experience pain the further they develop a neural pathway to produce pain whilst doing 'x'. Brett is a specialist at guiding his clients to experience 'x' without the pain association and largely achieves this by gradually exposing you to more and more positive experiences whether that be an exercise (i.e. lunging confidently without the association to future pain), a thought (starting a new fitness regime without the association of your body breaking down) or an environment (i.e. standing in a lift and not relying on the wall). There is a lot of hope for you, what you need is a clear strategy and someone you feel safe with and cared for.
  • I've had physio, I now feel better but I still fear exercise. Do I just need a strength programme?
Not entirely, no. Alongside gaining awareness as to why your current fear exists, you can undergo a strength programme that is designed with a strategy to gradually exposure you to more and more movement as you feel confident to do so.
  • What is a great question to ask before I hire a coach to help me?
(After consultations and assessments) You understand my history, you understand my problem(s) and you understand my desired outcome(s). Now let's imagine I have achieved my outcome, what have I done to get here? In the answer you are looking for a strategy and milestones. If the answer if very generic and missing any strategy then it's time to find a new coach.
