In almost every consultation, I meet people who feel like life is testing them through pain, fear, and suffering. However, the lens (perception) through which we look at life can empower or disempower us.
To think life is testing us, maybe even working against us, can and does weigh heavy on the mind. So, I prefer to view life as a reflection, revealing who we are in the present moment.
Life is not a test, but how we frame what happens to us in life can profoundly affect how we experience the present moment, reflect on the past and consider our future.
If you are experiencing the same challenges over and over, it's not bad luck or just how life is; your brain is filtering reality in ways you may not realise.
So, what if life isn’t testing you but simply reflecting you? I want to expand on how your emotional state shapes your reality.
Your Emotional State Shapes Your Reality
In every moment, your brain processes vast amounts of sensory information as you experience the world around you. What is truly fascinating is that before this sensory information reaches the logical part of your brain (the cortex), it first passes through your emotional centers, particularly the limbic system.
That means your emotions filter how you perceive the sensory information before you interpret it.
The Impact of Emotional Filters
If you are feeling anxious, the world seems threatening.
If you are feeling confident, challenges look like opportunities.
If you believe you are not good enough, neutral situations can feel like rejection.
The key takeaway here is that your external world is shaped by your internal state. Make sure to read that over and over until it makes sense! This is a big realisation for many people.

Your external world
is shaped by your internal state
Life Reflects What You Believe, It Is Not Testing You
Your mind filters everything through emotions and subconscious beliefs, meaning your struggles are often reflections of your inner world. Life is not setting obstacles in your path to punish you, it is holding up a mirror, showing you where you are not yet free.
This mindset is genuinely empowering and is life-changing if you can harness it in the present.
Common Patterns & What They Reveal
Constantly feeling unheard? You might believe your voice doesn’t matter.
Criticism unsettles you? Your self-worth may depend on external validation.
Fear of rejection? It could point to an unconscious fear of not being enough.
The patterns you experience are not random. They are invitations to look inward.
Where There’s Resistance, There’s an Opportunity for Freedom
The areas in life that trigger you the most, where you feel stuck, frustrated, or afraid, are often where the most significant growth is possible. Instead of seeing these moments as obstacles, what if you viewed them as learning opportunities?
Reframing Challenges as Growth Opportunities
You can view difficult conversations as a challenge or as an invitation to communicate more clearly.
You can consider frustration as a dead end or as a sign that something in your mindset needs to shift.
You can believe resistance is life holding you back or that life is showing you where you are not yet free.
Creating massive change in your life doesn't have to be complicated, but it may be complex because of your deepest beliefs, biases and childhood conditioning.
Shifting Your Perspective
Understanding that reality is not fixed but filtered allows for greater optimism towards life's challenges. Further, understanding that filter can be updated allows for empowerment and freedom in everyday living.
The next time you find yourself stuck in a familiar challenge, ask yourself:
What is this moment reflecting back to me?
What belief is shaping how I’m seeing this situation?
If I were free from this belief, how would I respond differently?
When you shift your internal world, your external world follows. Life isn’t testing you. It’s showing you who you are.
The power of this realisation? That’s where real transformation begins.
